I recently found out that someone I had offered help to because they were “drowning”, gave pretty much all their work to me under the guise of “taking a little bit off their plate”. That’s the last time I try to help someone; didn’t realize I’d be taken advantage of.

This is such a funny industry. To some people, drowning means “I’m getting about 4 hrs of sleep a day, I can feel my heartbeat in my eyeballs, I’m billing 280 hr months and working for one partner that’s an early bird and another who’s a night owl. I literally don’t have time to do what I need to do and am starting to fantasize about getting hit by a bus because at least then I could rest.”

To other people, drowning means “I’m on one deal, but that deal consistently gives me work each day and I’m often working past 5 PM to keep up.”

SA1, that’s a good point. I’m certainly not arguing that 80% of associates would get fired. But by the same token, it’s not enough to be a profitable attorney—you have to be profitable enough that it’s worth keeping you instead of either giving your work to a less expensive attorney or distributing your hours among a smaller pool of attorneys.

I think that second point is the real danger here… Firms realizing that with the benefit of AI they can go from 10 attorneys to something like 7 attorneys and bill just as many hours overall.

Yup, I thought that we were good friends but I was ultimately taken advantage of. Will definitely be more careful going forward who I offer help to

Won’t they be hurting themselves and low on hours? Hurts them too right ?

like

I would think so, but I guess they just don’t really care

Any corp associates looking to move from biglaw to a boutique? My firm remains busy and is looking to bring on a couple associates. We’re all either hybrid or fully remote, and that’s here to stay. 1500 billables and we’re serious about it. Work is primarily ECVC, Outside GC, M&A.
