Usually they're blind requests. Ohio passed a law permitting police departments to charge for releasing footage. I don't love it, but I also don't love that they're taking the worst day of someone's life and monetizing it forever with a boomer-bait caption like "Entitled Millennial FREAKS OUT When Held Accountable"
I love it. Reviewing and exacting those videos before releasing them is a pain in the ass.
Interesting take on the chilling effect. I wonder if it holds any real water. I’ve never heard of someone not calling the cops bc they’re afraid the body cam footage could end up online. Not saying it doesn’t or cannot happen, just feels like such a niche consideration. If I am calling emergency services, YouTube is literally the last thing on my mind.
Well we have to consider that not all DV is imminent physical violence. There are people trapped in homes with people who emotionally and verbally abuse them and make threats against their safety and they just wish for the abuser to leave. Public humiliation is also another method of abuse, so the threat of public humiliation, whether during an interaction with police, online, or within their community is very real and can deter a person from calling for help to get the abuser removed from their home. Saw someone mention how their abuser would threaten to expose things about them so that it was recorded via bodycam if they were to call the police.
