I’m in discussions to become the GC of a mid size but international company that does ~$1 billion in annual revenue. Smallish legal department. They’ve asked for my comp expectations. I don’t have specific expectations but I want to be compensated at least market for a NYC based GC (which looks like cash comp of at least $300k plus bonus, etc). My parents got divorced 6 years ago and my dad kinda gave up on life. His American dream was to graduate with an actuary degree (which he did 2 years ago) and find a corporate job but it never happened...He gave up on life to a point that has no food and is behind rent because he doesn't want to get a $15 an hour job or a maintenance/painting job. He doesn't do drugs or alcohol and my wife is going to kill me if she finds out again that I gave him money again.

My VP asked my fellow team member to take on a task simply because of her race to help them land a grant renewal. We’re both women of color but since I didn’t match the target audience I was not asked even though the task is on a project I am overseeing. I am meeting with my old VP of HR for lunch soon, they got let go after a few months with the company. I had a great working relationship with them and felt they were really trying to push me forward in the company unlike my manager. I’m so grumpy about new campus hires. Sometimes I’m judgmental (your hobby is “working on your golf swing,” really?). Sometimes I’m just exhausted by the worried earnestness.
