I don't know enough about security to comment, but I am definitely intrigued. Did they give you a reason why they wanted you to do your job poorly? What a horrible experience. I hope you find somewhere that will appreciate your effort.
As someone with extensive loss prevention experience, most of it comes down to everyone being afraid of lawsuits. One company I worked for, they lost EVERYTHING that was recovered over a five year span because of two bad stops.
Some companies (looking at you, Lowes) don't even bother trying to stop shoplifters, or calling the police.
Security companies look at their main job is to call the police if anything goes down. A lot of places (perhaps most) specifically forbid guards from doing anything BUT call the police. Made even more laughable in that the police are under no obligation to respond to or prevent crime (Castle Rock v Gonzanes)
