I used to think compensation in accounting was pretty straightforward: work hard, gain experience, move up steadily. But after a few years, it feels much more nuanced than that. Some people stay loyal and progress slowly but steadily, while others make strategic jumps and accelerate much faster financially. Neither path is necessarily wrong, but it definitely changes how you think about career planning. I’m curious whether people here feel their comp progression has been mostly intentional or m

I think there’s two sides to this. Especially earlier in your career, you can make more by changing jobs frequently, but you also don’t grow as quickly either tangibly (understanding of job requirements and ability to fulfill those requirements) or intangibly (building strong relationships that progress your career long-term) when you move around a lot. So in a large professional services firm, if your goal is to make partner and be a lifer, I think staying at one place sets you up for that better long-term, but if you aren’t looking to overall career progression and are trying to maximize your earnings over a shorter time frame, moving around can be a good way to do that. I’m not saying one approach is better than the other, just that there are tradeoffs either way you go.

I will say that where I work (Big 4), the people who bounce around tend not to get promoted as fast and also get smaller annual raises than the long-termers, so I think the money does eventually even out with probably a higher ceiling on average for stayers, but it takes awhile to actually realize that upside and assumes that you do keep things on track progression wise.

Former client( filed a bar grievance that was dismissed, sent me a demand letter that an attorney responded to on my behalf, and filed a BBB complaint against my non-BBB law firm) has now pro se filed a lawsuit against me in small claims court. Alleging misrepresentation, failure to file a lawsuit, and failure to advise during the process. I have phone logs, emails, and billing notes (all of which she has) that show she’s lying. Should I notify my malpractice carrier? All advice appreciated!

What would you do if you didn’t need money? I have a fair amount coming one day and don’t actually need to work to live a good life (middle / upper-middle class). I just feel unhappy so often and am wondering what this is all leading to. Scared I’m wasting my life being unhappy / in turmoil cause it’s what my culture wants me to do.
