I wanted your thoughts on a situation. The firm chose a delegation for a business development event abroad, and one of my junior team members was selected without any prior discussion or notice. I only found out by coincidence. Since such events are rare and there’s no rotation practice, do you think this should make me reconsider my future plans within the firm?

Could the junior team member have any affiliation with the country where the event is taking place? I imagine that if it’s abroad and that’s the junior’s country of origin or the junior speaks the language then it is a no brainer. However, if that’s not the case, maybe ask the selection criteria. There might be some detail you’re missing.

If this is how you typically speak / write, that could be a reason

I think quitting the firm over this might be a little drastic. Assuming the firm is large and that only a handful of people were chosen for this, it would be crazy if each unselected person were considering quitting.

Is it just your team or other teams as well?

One of the most frustrating things about being an associate is that you have no say and no insight into decisions like this. You can bring it up ("I would have loved that opportunity") but it doesn't change until you're no longer an associate.

like

How big is the team? How big is your firm? I’m in a larger environment, so something like this would not bother me at all. There are just a lot of folks out there, and different opportunities go to different folks, for whatever reason. I wouldn’t give it a second thought, unless you’re in a very small environment, and this feels like a purposeful exclusion.

like

Since your group only has 4 associates and you think you should have been selected due to seniority, I would see this as a snub.

While they are away, I would put out feelers for other opportunities. I’m sure there are better firms out there.

Don’t reconsider, everyone has a particular quality that makes them noticeable and stand out. Just keep working good and build your portfolio and evade the BS that happens in the profession.

Just had a hearing on my motion to compel where OC told the judge we hadn’t conferred before filing the motion. Not only did I attempt to confer on 3 separate dates, I attached the emails and his response that he refused to confer to my motion. Judge didn’t care, as soon as she heard him say we hadn’t conferred she denied the motion. Not asking a question, just needed to vent.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

I’m so bad at writing the background/ facts section for briefs… it always gets heavily edited and no one is giving me constructive feedback other than “advocate more”. In contrast, my legal argument section is generally without edits. For context, first defense lit job post appellate clerkship. Is this normal?? Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?
