I will go through several rounds of interviews swimmingly just to have one person who, seemingly for no reason is combative and short with me, tank my chances. They don’t listen well, they have to “just a sec go get my dog” after a thoughtful answer, and doubt your answers when it was perfectly fine for several others. On such a high horse. So stupid and shameful.

Sometimes I think they already have already decided not to go with sb even before the interview

Are you sure that the one person you describe is the person that is tanking your chances? Going “swimmingly” does not mean that they want to hire you.

Understand. My point is that the person being the hardass may be your biggest advocate.

OK, ok. So you need a strategy for dealing with this. You can read the room, that's a great start. What's your strategy?

I would say, don’t assume everyone will be the same. Assess very quickly their styles, ie, no bser, to the point, or super friendly, etc., and be prepared to match the energy accordingly. Something that always throws me off guard.

I read this super interesting article about how big companies like Toyota are investing in social-emotional training for their employees and seeing massive benefits. I actually think this could be a whole separate class for students of all ages. Learning about conflict resolution, growing your own self-regulation skills...it's really important.

I'm an introverted person, like to keep to myself, focus on work, spend the rest of my time on family, gym etc. I've been told that I need to work on my communication and client relationship building skills. any books I can read? I don't follow pop. culture anymore, no longer actively follow team sports (but sporty myself) as I consider it bread and circus for the masses and don't rly enjoy work drinks... Am I doomed? Personally I am happy and love the work but fear for my career progression.

Horrible anxiety about considering a new job....
I was one of the big firm stealth layoffs in covid and joined a boutique firm in Sept. They came sort of close to matching my salary but I moved to SoCal and have an opportunity to jump back in to big law and get $100k raise. The people at the small firm are so nice, but hours are nuts and if I’m going to work this much, I might as well get paid more, right? Is it too soon?
