I work a boutique litigation law firm (think 5-10 lawyers). We are considering changing our bonus structure because doing it by annual hours milestones doesn’t feel right for our firm’s culture anymore (we are very very into being a lifestyle/work-life balance firm). What are other ways that your firm compensates the hard work of associates rather than bonus based on X annual hours? Looking for traditional answers (like profit share %) and unique answers too (expense paid vacation?)!

We basically pay a lower than market base salary. Once an associate hits a designated overhead allocation (less than partner overhead allocation) they keep 30 percent of working receipts and ten percent of originations. We have a small shop like yours and associates could make more money than biglaw depending on hours and collections.

like

We have a profit sharing % that goes into my 401k, which is incredible. I don’t know the %, and I also don’t know if it’s based on my performance or not.

Bonuses include a standard end-of-year bonus (hits before Christmas) and a black-box bonus after the year’s billing is reviewed. It’s not really just hours based, a lot of it is efficiency, client development, etc.

Also a decent yearly stipend for home office supplies! That’s been very very nice

like

Every associate gets the same bonus based on the firm’s profits.
(We have other nice benefits too - 5% contribution to the 401K, a defined benefit pension, employer-paid healthcare, student loan assistance)

like

No billable hours and random black-box bonuses

like

Bonus based on individual receipt collections

like

Monthly bonuses if billing over 170 hours, which increases every ten hours over that

Can anyone tell me whats the median salary for Functional Safety Engineer? I had an offer for 140k (it was a 6 month contract position though). I am not expecting them to match or put in an offer close to that amount, but just wanted to get an estimate.

I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Solid tips or strategies on cutting back on alcohol? My bf & I were moderate drinkers before the pandemic, but over the year I’m fairly confident we’ve become heavy drinkers (6-7days/wk). I’m stressed about it and have mentioned cutting back for a while, but he insists we’re fine. I find it rly difficult to go cold turkey or cut by myself when he’s still drinking as “normal” and we share our living space. We’re aware of all the health risks, but that alone hasn’t changed us. All advice welcome!
