I work at a midsized consulting company and make a decent salary. However, I’ve been on the bench for months and management is starting to get tired of me, plus I have several toxic coworkers. So I went on the hunt and secured a job in HR at a prestigious university, and it seems like a pretty stable recession-proof job. But it was a $14k pay cut. I just received a raise at the current firm, and now the new job would be a $20k pay cut. I already accepted the offer days ago. What should I do?

Youre insane for accepting that offer, why in the world would you do that

Bench & a bone to pick with management is NOT a situation you want to be in during turbulent times. You don't have to do this university job forever, but it does seem safer in the immediate term

Consulting is way more prestigious and fun than HR, no?

like

It’s not HR directly. It’s the HR department, but same field as now and management title

I don't know, I think it's great you landed a safe, salary earning job. It sounds like you were at risk of being let go anyway.

If it helps coming from a stranger I took a 16k pay cut two months ago and so far I am much happier. My old job was toxic as well.

I would take the job at the university if HR / university admin is something you want to do long term. There may be a pay cut, but universities usually have better work life balance, more relaxed work cultures, and better benefits—particularly retirement. Your consulting firm is still toxic at the end of the day and a pay raise won’t change that. Assuming you can afford your lifestyle on the university salary, of course…

like

I see. The job will just be in the HR department, but field will be the same as current but in a management position

smart

Way better to take a 20k pay cut now for a stable gig than take a 100% pay cut if you stay in your current job and get laid off imo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Consulting is so competitive just move to another consultancy you could easily land another job, that’s if you want to remain in consulting. Nothing wrong with declining the offer just explain your circumstances have changed.
