Me too. It seems like everyone I know in tech right now is unhappy, overwhelmed and stressed.
Following to hear what people say as I am in the same boat
Every other role is like this within a company outside of sales.
However, with Sales your numbers speak for yourself. You don’t have to worry about politics if you sell.
Following along, too.
In terms of IC roles with similar comp, probably not too many immediately. Maybe corporate strategy or something if you’ve done a lot of strategy work? Or business analyst, which tbh just comes with a similar set of problems.
I think the corporate culture testing you just means your best course of action would be to find a different company with better culture. That might give you a good reset.
It’s possible you could switch into something like project management or program management, but the transferable skills are a little bit different and I feel like you might have to deal with even MORE politics.
I moved industry hybrids myself. Tech is a massively hybridized industry, “pure tech” is one thing but there’s tons of roles that use the same skills when you look at it through the hybrid lenses such as: biotech, fintech, etc.
I say go for the hybrid industry you want that has a high chance of the things you’re looking for. Based on my limited knowledge of just your post, I’d personally say look at things in the EdTech space. Also remember that the industry how we perceive it and our skills have overlap. While I say EdTech you can look at companies selling into Education (sell side) or Education buying tech (buy side), both sides of the coin need the skills we have. Sell side companies tend to be the hard and fast ones with big risk and big pay outs, buy side tends to be better WLB.
Me? I went FinTech but at an established large firm. My skills are thus FinTech, I work in High Finance in the buy side of my profession. I’ve done my time in sell side firms to level me up quickly, now I’m enjoying the change of pace and solid pay. It’s like a semi-retirement.
