BigLaw is a thousand times worse, similar money for worse hours and narrower exit ops
IB is ten thousand times worse, more money but far worse hours and far narrower exit ops
SWE is great if you find it interesting, I personally found it terribly boring
Pro
Because MBB normally do a firm sponsored MBA whereas IB usually don’t - I assume, I didn’t make the chart but love watching consultants get upset when they see it

People might disagree but I like international tax consulting as well lol (not compliance); I moved from law to tax consulting and find it interesting; especially if you plan to set up a shop in the future. With the new growth of tax tech similar to fintech I think there is lots of room to grow with tax planning.

FB always talks about swe like it is some easy transition. It isn’t. Most here would have to go back to get an ms to make the transition unless you somehow really know algorithms & data structures.
And then based on what I saw when I was at FANG you better be among the best SWEs. Otherwise you aren’t getting hired or getting that big pay.

There aren’t many 50yo SWEs at fang…
Consulting hours are marginally better than IB and BigLaw. Exit ops are better for boring / low-growth corporate roles. They’re worse than IB in PE and other high fuhnance roles, and worse than SWE/PM in tech.
Partner at MBB is a good path but a narrow one.
I was never a banker but have also heard there is more downtime and sometimes the work is monotonous but I’m sure there’s tons of excel modeling a typical consultant couldn’t sniff
Why?

Big law - that’s a real hot take. Agree with the rest
BigLaw is literally for all the people who couldn’t get into any of the other mentioned professions (some exceptions of course). From that perspective, it’s a strong backup but is definitely not one to pick over the others and for good reason
