Family 100%
As someone who doesn’t want kids, single option. Live extremely well while working and in retirement, never worry about money, support current family and close friends as needed, retire 20 years before family option, explore and make friends across the world while working and in retirement.
Pro
If you choose to not have a family, the matrix has you.

So a 90th percentile household income + you get a spouse and kids + a 40 hour work week
Vs.
A 99th percentile single income but no spouse/kids + 38% working time
Sorry, who would even choose the single route?
Chief
Happy to entertain different perspectives. Trading out having any significant partner/family in your life and terrific work life balance just to 3-4x your household income is bad math.
Your hypothetical might have made more sense if you dropped the HHI of the family or raised the earnings of the single scenario. As it is, the people choosing the latter are largely doing so because they’re interpreting the kids as a mandatory inclusion and they just don’t want kids in general

Family is the best ever. No amount of money comes close to

What kind of trolleyology is this
The answer depends on if you want a family or not.
Are huzz allowed
Rising Star
assume yes but nothing long term for the first scenario and
Second
second scenario is basically a typical scenario 😅 and a decent one at that with high HHI and 40 hour week
The second option sounds good, but there will be no kids, and we will be extra comfortable.
I'm good with the first option too. I'd retire much faster.
Family...it's not close
Family 100%.
Family, and i’m a major snob and want all the fancy things.
Most people would jump at both. As an educator of 30 years, most of us dont come close to either. It was be a blessing in this economy.
Im 43 with no kids and im single and I feel a major part of my life is missing so I would choose family and still being upper middle class over any other option.
And who wouldn't be able to afford 2 kids with a dual annual income of 250K? Do you live in the real world?
