A huge problem is minority advancement within an organization. There’s far more minorities in jr -mid level roles. There’s nobody at the top. Most minorities get pushed out, burned out or cock blocked from moving up.
I would invent a grant or fund or scholarship that was in place to pay for minority marketing students food and board while they do internships at large companies. I think that holds a lot of people back from getting solid jobs after finishing school.
The biggest problem in this industry is that they, including most of the higher up minorities, believe that only white creatives should concept and write. I swear they always throw us in the bottom level of production for whatever the white creative comes up with or write. They don’t let us have an opinion or voice even when the projects are supposed to be created by diverse teams.
What non-white creative would want to work in this industry after coming to this realization? Minority creatives who see this want to bounce and find another career. It’s not all about who comes into the bottom of this business/industry. The question is should you come into this industry knowing that it’s formulated to keep you at the bottom? How do you feel about working at a place that doesn’t value your opinion and only values hitting their minority hiring quota?
