I’d encourage them for sure! Engineering opens up so many doors, and it teaches problem-solving that’s useful in any field. But I’d also make sure they know it’s challenging and requires commitment. If they’re passionate and curious, it’s a great path. I’d be really happy if they followed in my path honestly.
Depends on the age in how I would approach it, but mainly I would always be encouraging in whatever they are showing an interest in. If they are younger I’d probably focus on more fun things and relatable activities, older I would be more realistic, yet still try to be optimistic.
Pro
I would encourage them to explore what they are passionate about! If they like problem solving then they will like engineering!
I don't have a kid, but I would encourage anyone who had a genuine interest in it. When I was a kid I would be interested in all kinds of things for a few weeks, if that long. I assume kids today are the same, they explore all sort of things. But sure, if they settled on engineering I'd encourage it.
Encourage
Is the kid a “born engineer “ or someone interested in the field because it pays well, or they are good at math and some counselor suggested it? My wife is the later! (Sorry honey- I do love you). Math whiz. Some counselor suggested engineering so she went for it. Had great grades, got a job in mfg engineering where I met her. Didn’t like it. Eventually moved into a management role where she does great- but couldn’t change the batteries in a tv remote!
If it is a passion I’d encourage it. Don’t go for the money as you don’t want to dredge into work because it pays well but you hate it. I loved to take things apart and try to use them to make other things so engineering was a natural.
Encourage for sure
I would be extremely encouraging but also reaffirm that they’re not doing this since this is what me, one of their parents does and that it is truly a passion they have.
At the end of the day as long as my kids are happy, I am happy. If they wanted to do engineering great, if not great. I am going to encourage my kids to pave their own path and figure out what they want to do.
