I would lean toward the newer work. Generally speaking, people seem to want to know what you're doing currently. And if something is older they may wonder why you are not showing them more current material.
In this market , they are looking for relevancy to their current work. But maybe do a mix of newer and older but relevant
Newer. Just reframe your current work to lean slightly more to the job. Also theres a bias these days for designers that ‘gets’ modern craft so showing older projects you risk being perceived as the other way round.
Newer. And if you had leadership experience in them you can tell the why behind the finished product. That's what I've found interviewers prefer most.
My role the past few years was less of what I wanted to do, and many of the roles I'm applying to now connect closer to my older work so I focus on those mostly. If you've had a similar title the past 5 years, newer makes sense as long as you can still demonstrate key skills in the new projects that the role is looking for.
Yeah I'm in a similar boat. My newer work is better from a visual craft perspective and I've been in more of a lead position for them, but my older work is closer to the type of work I'm trying to get a new role for. Hence the conundrum. Perhaps I have to do one of each.
Probably focus on what I thought was more suitable for the for the role I was interviewing for. If nothing else, I can mix a match, one older and one newer project.
