If you took a step back in your career when your kids where under 5, did you regret it? Wondering about taking a remote job with less pay so I can be home more with my baby. I know time with baby is priceless but don't want to hurt my career at the same time.

I haven’t but am considering it. I just returned from mat leave and I just have zero interest right now in working. I was burnt out before mat leave and don’t think that helped. My sister took a few years off and then worked part time (non legal) and she has always encouraged me to do the same. It took her a few more years to get back to full time work (think she went FT sometime when they were elementary school age). Didn’t really impact her career—just cut her savings a bit. Just always talks about that time period as something she wouldn’t take back.

If I had the option of a remote job, I would take it. Just remember, though, that you’ll still need childcare when working from home; once the toddler years hit, you’re not going to be able to work and care for a toddler at the same time.

A3, that’s awesome if your job allows! I tried to do PT after my maternity leave was up but between hearings, depositions, meetings, etc it just didn’t really work and I was just in my home office from 9-5 anyway.

I took a remote, reduced hours role when my oldest was 5 and my youngest was 11 months. I thought maybe I’d do it until my youngest was in kindergarten. He’s in third grade and I still have no interest in going back to a traditional role. My current role isn’t partner track but we have our own hierarchy and I’ve been promoted twice. There’s nothing like feeling like you’re in charge of your own life.

Yes, obviously. Being remote can make a huge difference, especially with little ones that go to bed early. For instance, you could have a lunch every day with your baby, instead of at your desk.

No, it’s obviously the right choice.

Yup! I worked at a midsize firm for 3 years at about 800 hours a year with very low stress. It was a unicorn gig and I felt like a SAHM 80% of the time. I then pivoted to PT remote in BigLaw now that my kids are in elementary school. Dad is home PT. It’s different. I’m not able to do as many drop offs and pickups, I’m still with them most days before and after school, I volunteer a lot, I host elaborate play dates every few weeks. I missed out on some experience during those years but the downshift didn’t hurt me.

I don’t really consider a remote job as “taking a step back.” There are many people who do this even without kids and it doesn’t hurt their careers lol. If you have this opportunity, go for it!

like

Agreed, remote is a huge win and separate from reducing hours. Some of the biggest rainmakers resist RTO bc time spent in the car is time they could spend billing or being with clients.

Hopefully if you're remote and can stay remote you can then ramp up your time when you're ready without the stress of actually being in the office more.

For me that means logging on after my baby is asleep but I spend mealtimes with her and I even nurse her on demand bc my husband is stay at home dad.

I know someone with good biotech/Pharma BD&L experience that is looking for a new role given the current biotech layoff scene. Did anyone else adopt the new Florida Wonders curriculum? We just adopted it this school year, and I teach 4th grade. My team and I have not found a good flow, schedule, or whatever you want to call it. We feel like it teaches too many skills in one lesson, and we are not able to truly teach anything “deep” enough for students to master. Does anyone have any insight? What do you do? Do you like the curriculum? Why or why not? Would you be willing to share what you do weekly/daily? Thanks!

My joining is on 11th July. I believe I have to collect the laptop from Camac street on joining date. But after laptop collection, should I WFH as the Technopolis office is not ready? Also, how much time does it take on first day for all the formalities? After laptop collection and formalities, I am planning to return to my hometown which is 250 km away.

I got an offer from Pwc IAC, HR confirmed over mail that this is a permanent work from home position. But not mentioned in the offer letter.

I got an email confirmation from HR, which simply says "you can work anywhere from India".

I am not willing to relocate to Bangalore, can i trust HR, if anyone working in pwc is aware of such policies please share your inputs.
