You can make a lot as a creative brand side. I made $400k+ as an ACD at one tech company and $500k as an Art Director. Requires a fair chunk of luck as a big part of it is stock compensation, but if you play your cards right and have a good portfolio there’s plenty of ways to make a decent living in this industry.
Easiest pivots imo would be production, or product design/writers, but also those jobs are getting harder to come by. The pay can be much higher for product design, but around the same for producers.
Is it hard to get a good portfolio while working brand side? I’m interviewing with a great brand right now but none of the CD’s books are good but not blowing me away. I’m told I have a strong book currently. I think I’d like it there but I want to set myself up for success in the future. Hopefully one of these higher paying opportunities.
The titles may be a little different, but in house agencies are even more common and well-established than they used to be. Where I work my title is “Senior Manager of Brand Creative,” which just translates to ACD (haven’t updated my title on here).
It can be tricky to navigate but if there’s a brand you’re interested in, just do a little research on Linkedin and maybe DM someone you suspect is in a role you’d be interested in.
More money? Probably sales is the only easily pivotable position.
you could probably do brand management, but creative will be a super small part of your job at that point and it will be way more business and numbers oriented. would probably be step backwards at least temporarily to move up the ranks
