If your offer letter doesn’t have a response deadline, what’s generally considered an appropriate amount of time?

Others might think this is nuts, but if someone doesn’t accept within two business days I start to think they’re not excited about joining us and that makes me less excited about them

In this case, I am actively weighing another opportunity (and I was transparent about it up front). For now, I sent them some follow-up questions regarding the offer package so at least they know I am still actively considering them.

Communicate. Acknowledge your receipt of the offer and ask when they’d like you to get back to them by.

This is obviously the answer. The letter is a formality. The dialogue is with whomever called and extended the offer. You of course say you’re very grateful for and excited about the offer and also “can I take a few days to get back to you / discuss this with my family,” during which time you reach out with any salary negotiation.

Two weeks is pretty standard.

2-3 days in my experience. A week upon request.

Once had an offer revoked after 1 week. I always try to respond within a few days or make clear when I plan to get back to them by

like

3 days.

like

Just communicate with the offering firm the time you need. I believe you have one day to respond with confirmation that you received it and, in that response, state how long you plan to take to decide. Anything less than a week and no explanation necessary. If you need longer than a week, plan on explaining.

like

A week

Emails should be responded to within 1 business day

the amount of time necessary to procure a higher offer to present to them to negotiate a higher salary

Thanks - I was just going to ask the same. I mean it takes a bit for them to respond to your interest and schedule an interview, they should at least give you some time to decide (aka wait for another offer).

I have two job offers, one offers a salary of 61.5k and the other job offers an hourly rate of $27.65 with $41.48 for OT, as well as Sales Incentive Compensation Plan where the annual target incentive compensation is 42.86%. In other words, I could potentially receive quarterly bonuses that add up to around $24,650. However, that bonus isn’t guaranteed according to the offer letter and is contingent on my and my clients performance. Should I take the first job or second job?

Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

This is not my wheelhouse so I’m not sure of the answer. If someone is writing a “memoir” and is including me in it, and I DONT want to be in the book, do I have any legal recourse? I understand since it’s been published it doesn’t meet any invasion of privacy or potential defamation yet, but is there something I can do preliminarily to protect myself and stop my inclusion?

If I’ve already agreed to a start date on 11/28 how bad would it be to reach out and ask to push it to 12/5?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
