Varies by law firm
and practice area and group.
After you get offers you will have the leverage you need to ask probing questions about firm culture to associates before accepting. Just make sure that you’re asking politely. Women associates especially will understand what you’re getting at
Sexual harassment is widespread at law firms. But that does not make it legal or acceptable.
You might want to ask the Women in Law bowl about the firm’s reputation.
Certain firms do have worse reputations for sexual harassment than others. For example, one associate shared that his former firm had a pool party so that they could see female associates in their bathing suits.
You can also draw inferences. Check out if women are in leadership positions in your target practice group, or even partners. Talk to former female associates. Research the kinds of clients and cases the partners made their names on, to see if they have a history of representing sexual harassers.
Sounds like A&O pre-merger.
It’s not that serious, just go if you get an offer and be normal. These things are bound to happen here and there given the size of these NYC offices.
That doesn’t address my question. Thank you.
No reason not to call out the firm specifically as that will get you better responses. It’s certainly not the case at all firms especially as firms have buttoned up their summers more recently.
As an example, Latham has historically been viewed as a fratty firm but our summer program has been toned down to such an extreme that it’s an entirely different experience to what it was before covid. If recruiting hears about an afterparty following a sanctioned event, it’s no longer a matter of not covering costs, it’s a matter of looping in HR and not being invited to participate in the summer program going forward.
Is it not a faux pas to name the firm if I’m saying something potentially negative?
