I’m a mid level associate at a Seven Sister firm in Canada in a high-demand, cross-border practice area. What’s the typical process for making the move to NY? Should I be writing the bar on my own time so I’m more marketable, or secure a job first?

I moved about 4 years ago - a recruiter found me a role and then my new firm in NYC paid for me to move, gave me paid leave to write the bar, etc. I’d say try to find a job first so you don’t waste your time unless you have to move — the NY bar is no fun and studying for it is a full time job.

I only got traction after I wrote the NY bar.

Sorry to hijack, but are firms still okay with TNs or are even those seen as risky these days?

The firm can pay for you to take the bar, pay for your exams, hotel if any related to taking the bar and give you a month off work to study. Securing the job should be the priority in my opinion. Everything else, they can facilitate.

15 YOE, recently started my first tech PR job at a large, stable company & have been asked to get ~20 SMEs in front of media. Subject matter is not sexy. I lead PR for all of U.S. & have no other PR colleagues. My agency’s budget is 100k/year & they’re spread too thin to hit their KPIs. I feel set up to fail & feel we should be focusing on a handful of SMEs and only our sexiest topics. Any advice on mitigating unrealistic expectations for coverage? Anyone handled similar problems in the past?

Might be the wrong bowl but finding it extremely difficult to focus on work post busy season. It’s been 2 weeks since we filed and I’m still taking lots of naps and breaks (I’m talking like 3-4 cumulative hrs worked during the day). Idk if I’m taking longer to recover from busy season bc I’m getting old or if I’m over public accounting (but then where do i go). Tried to schedule time with a therapist but everyone has a months-long waitlist so next step might be trying to find a life/career coach

I feel like I've been lowballed, can someone explain the below breakdown please?

Base salary: 60k
Quarterly quota (per quarter): 107k
Quarterly bonus (per annum): 23k
130% Annual bonus = 11.5k
"23% commission on quota minus base": 37k (don't understand this)
"Proposed 23% commission on 150% quota minus base": 86.5k
Sales commission threshold per month: 22k
OTE: 122k
Cost/Sales: 28%

That base salary is lower than my previous base by a significant amount by 32.7%

I interviewed at a law firm and had my final round last Friday. The Tuesday afterward, I got a call from the recruiter saying the firm won’t have a decision for another week. I believe they’re interviewing other candidates. Does that make me second or third choice? And does the fact that I’m working with a recruiter hurt my chances of being selected due to the commission? Should I hold out for the offer or is 1+ week a sign that I won’t be selected?

How do find a recruiter in the legal field? Have been looking for a job for a year now and trying to transition into another practice area. Applied to more than 20 jobs and still no offers. I feel like I might need some help.
Also, I have no idea how these arrangements work. Do you pay the recruiter to look for the jobs or do you pay them when you get the job? Or does the employer pay them?
