I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. As a black woman in accounting we are few and far between as well. I don’t see anyone like me even in my office as coworkers or even at client sites. It can be stressful but work isn’t our whole life at least. You should try to find more of a community outside of work or go somewhere that prioritizes diversity a little more. My firm claims they do but eh. I’ve never been made to feel uncomfortable though by coworkers but I’m sure every firm is different. I hope it gets better.
Is any of it affecting your work?
I have definitely felt the same many times. The best solution for me was 2 fold:
1) found a pathway to be remote so there was separation from the "office politics" and my physical office.
2) found a manager to be under that was going to be a good support and not a hindrance.
These 2 things helped me mentally flush out the micro-racism/undermining that was present and let me not only focus, but excel in on my work.
My motto is work is work. I am there simply to make money. My "family, community, support system" are the people in my personal life that I choose.
For any work obstacles/prejudices, I would use chatgpt to write a super sweet email expressing the vision of working together leads to more money for the company and always Cc some super higher ups.
--> after some time, the bad seeds were fired/resigned and the others came to clarity.
It definitely required a lot of patience. But we are creators of our own reality.
Don't let anyone (including yourself) stand in the way of your success/wealth
It most certainly impacts my work and progression. It’s been better since going remote, but I still feel a lot of anxiety at the start of each week. I am remote, but there’s a contingent in NY that go to the office and have social events, creating a clique. I have a “good” manager who is now at least female, but she’s still culturally similar (American, white, comes from wealth), very young, and susceptible to taking sides / bias (as we humans do). She clearly knows the culture and the political game far better than I do, and I can’t help but feel that for me to become like her will be an impossible task, but somehow is the only way to progress

There should definitely be opportunities for remote folks to be on site with everyone else and that’s on leadership to create those opportunities. I’d recommend some coffee chats with others there if possible, being active in extracurriculars at your job and pressuring leadership for an on site opportunity to interact with each other. And, I would be looking for a new job. There is no reason that a team with mixed locations should not feel like a team. I’ve been leading remote and hybrid teams for 10 years and I don’t get it.
I felt that way in my practice when I first joined. And I made sure to vocalize that diplomatically when it was appropriate. With HR, other leaders, my peers, etc. eventually we grew our numbers of women but sadly the politics of what it took each woman to get there made that culture a little bumpy at first. Meaning even the woman behaved a little edgy. But I’ve since left and it sounds like there’s great progress and culture now.
