I'm a new recruiter and could use some advice from seasoned recruiters. I was about to hire a great candidate that the whole team loved, but she just had a total meltdown over our background check requirements. She got aggressive on the phone and used some pretty derogatory language. It’s the first time I’ve seen her act like this. Is it worth addressing this behavior, or should I just move on to the next person?

Background checks are pretty standard-criminal, places of residence and for some roles credit. What was her issue? If she reacted in an offensive manner and being derogatory-absolutely no further consideration.

Move on. If they are that offensive now…. The red flags are waving!

move on!

Decline out and move on.

If this is her response to something she didn't want to hear while still in the application process, imagine what's she's like once in place.

Document as much as you can with exact quotes. Inform the hiring managers of everything. File and on to the next candidate.

100% move on from this candidate. She lacks professionalism. If she does somehow pass the background check and accepts the position you’ll be replacing her in the near future anyways due to her attitude. If she acted like this with you she will act like this with her future employers. Keep going, we must persevere! And this is a good example of why having 3-5 candidates lined up for a role is ideal.

I am curious, If you perform a background check, do you send a pre and post adverse action letter if the candidate does not meet a certain requirement? They do have a right to know.

Yes, candidates should be informed ahead of what the BG will look at. If the BG doesn't pass, they need to be informed why. It doesn't have to be terribly specific - an area of interest and source will do. After all, they should know their own BG info.

(I recruit for a large corporation, small business may be different)

The only reason for a candidate to react negatively to a background check, which is a standard part of every hiring process, is that they have something on their record likely to prevent them from getting hired.

Move on, this candidate isn't worth your time.

One of my favorite background stories comes from working in manufacturing. We submitted candidates to a background check and a drug test that involved taking a hair sample. Had a candidate show up with a fully shaved body. We simply told them to go home unless they wanted us to REALLY look for a place to find some hair.

They left.

Absolutely, respectful decline this candidate and move on, as well as inform the team.

Just got another rejection... Is exiting to FAANG or MB really this hard? Trying to go tech.. or mbb, but not getting anywhere. I have 2 masters (mba, ms) from top schools, been in consulting for over 10 years, I am confident that I know my stuff well..but still I keep getting rejected. Interviewed with Google, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and a few others and every-time there is something that is not a match... are the hiring managers looking for like 100% match? That will never happen!!!
