I’m a senior associate at a mid-sized L&E firm, and I can’t help but notice a pattern—every high-stakes trial, major client pitch, or “big” matter goes to the male attorneys. Meanwhile, I get tapped for internal investigations, trainings, and compliance reviews. I do them well, but it’s not where the glory or promotions are. I know I’m just as qualified, but I’m tired of being the “reliable support” while others get to shine. Do I push back and risk being labeled “difficult,” or is it time to look elsewhere?

It’s worth raising the issue with someone you trust internally—sometimes bias is unconscious, and a nudge can shift things. But also assess whether the culture is actually willing to evolve. You deserve a place where your skills are seen and rewarded, not sidelined.

I think it’s worth being asked why you haven’t been considered. A partner once invited a male associate to go with him to a pitch in my hometown and I asked him why I wasn’t considered and he said “you’re right. Okay, you’re coming instead.”

It only took me 7 years to figure this system out.... posting in case it helps anyone else! I color coded my classes and printed off numbers according to the number of kids in my classes. I then assign each kid a number that corresponds with my gradebook. When they turn in their projects, they put their number with it. This way, no contact and I can easily see who has and hasn't turned in their projects yet. I take the list down once they remember their number.

I was just informed after the third round of interviews they’d like at least 5 references, two must be supervisors. My last job was a temporary remote job where I didn’t really interact with my supervisor and the jobs before that were at my family’s business (I do not speak to any of them for serious personal reasons.) Anything before that was grad school and I haven’t kept in contact with any professors from over five years ago. What should I do? 😕

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?
