Doesn’t matter just quit
Be sure to review the ethical obligations of a departing attorney. So many people I know think they are in the clear because they are just an associate or because they aren't too involved on a matter. Not the case. Be careful.
We had one associate leave who never filed her motions to withdraw and never told anyone. She had said she had it covered. We had to call the court to figure out why we hadn't received the file stamped copy of the motions yet (no e-filing), and they broke the news to us. She told me after the fact that she just didn't care because it wasn't "her client." But under the ethical rules, it was.
We had another associate leave, but before he gave notice, he was tasked with drafting a motion to dismiss. He never did it. On his last day, his access to files was cut off at 6pm. He contacted everyone that night asking why he couldn't access his email and saying that he hadn't yet started the motion. (To be fair, when he ignored our requests for updates, lied to our faces about being almost done, etc., we kind of assumed he hadn't done it and that someone else would have to. But he billed the client for the work, so we had to write it all off in light of the post-departure admission.)
And the most recent departure is an associate who gave his notice seven weeks before his trial was due to start. He knew that the only other attorney barred in that state is one who already had a trial around the same time. Now the client is pissed because we have to request a continuance.
The ethical rules state that the departure is treated as a termination of representation. That means you cannot do it without ensuring that there will be no prejudice to the client.

if the associate was that important have client engage them separately and then pro hac you in
Misled how? It’s never a good idea to burn bridges. This field is pretty small believe it or not. I would exit gracefully… but need more context obvi
I was sold a WLB and mentorship. I billed 2,400hrs and was given 0 guidance only to be massively berated for every mistake. I left with two weeks notice, and thank you card, and a bottle of wine on the partners’ desks.

That sucks. But don't let their bad behavior change who you are. The downside that you are not thinking of is that when you behave badly - even in response to someone else's bad behavior, it changes how you see yourself and therefore how you behave in the future. Behave like a professional no matter what others do. What goes around comes around, and you can only worry about your own karma. Let them worry about theirs.

It's just a lot harder to find a job when you don't have one. YMMV.
