I’m about to enter the freelance life after years of ft salaried jobs. This isn’t my choice but my reality. What’s your best advice for someone with some experience in the industry but none as fl?

Ask. For. Introductions.

I’ve stayed employed for years on end as a freelancer and 99% of that work has come from introductions.

Brilliant how have I never thought of this?!

Take absolutely everything you are offered in the beginning. Keep in steady contact with every person you’ve ever met in the industry.

If you can, save up 4-6 months worth of living expenses. Use it for dry spells and always replenish

Start a contact list. First reach out to ex coworkers and people you know, then to recruiters at agency’s you like, and then to agencies you don’t haha. Reach out every month or two… try to stay on radar but not be annoying. Just short intros and short reminders when you’re available

Find a tax professional and maybe consider LLC or S Corp if you’re planning on freelancing long term

If you’re totally new to it look up the book “Freelancers Guide to Freelancing” on Amazon

In the same position. Absolutely reach out to anyone you’ve ever worked with who might be able to help. Don’t be shy. You’ll be surprised who will help (and maybe surprised at those who don’t). Ask them to put in a good word with the recruiters at their agency. 100% of responses I have got have been referrals. Not one response from emailing someone cold. Even so, still email every recruiter you can. January is really quiet this year, so don’t let that throw you into a spin. I’ve emailed people I’ve worked with 10 years ago and not spoken to since. Play the game. Write nice things on people LinkedIn posts. It might help, it might not but it won’t do any harm.

Service design seems a popular role in consulting in the past year or so, certainly seeing more grads go down this route. Is there much overlap with business analysis? When I’ve worked with service designers the output seems to be another version of a process map, are there other skills and experience needed? I’m wondering how easy a move would be from business analysis to service design...

I am therefore looking for advice on how to go about this?

I have not had formal training so just learning on the HUB and by doing as I go.
But I feel like I need to focus on one area. I cannot decide how/ what though.
Happy Holidays!
Thank you.

Currently I have offers from 2 companies (say A and B), A is paying more but I want to join B (B is paying less but better brand). Planning to ask B to match salary that A offers. Have 2 doubts:
1) Does companies actually verifies the pay that the competition is offering? (Dont want to ruin my offer with A if B doesn't match the salary)
2) Will it impact my job prospects at A if it gets to know I tried to match their offer from a competition?
Pls help, TIA

Is WFH/remote work here to stay for freelancers? I’m in LA and considering a move to a much smaller market (Atlanta) but I’m worried about losing clients if I can’t physically go into the office (whenever that starts happening again).

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?
