I'm an 8th year associate at an AMLaw 200 (low end of the 200). My numbers are good enough to probably make partner this year but several in my position in past several years have taken a year as of counsel before going to partner. The firm seems to be shifting toward this as the more common path to partnership and encouraging that approach, generally, although giving me input in which I want to pursue. Anyone else seeing this trend? Thoughts?

Last associates committee meeting is coming up. Partners have asked each associate to come up with... not one... but FIVE marketing ideas. Other than reeling out “we offer competitive pay” in job postings, what are some good ones your firm does?

Negotiating a settlement. I’m at $10k, opposing counsel is at $20k. My client won’t go higher than $15k. OC has come down to 17.5k and says his client won’t budge from that. Do I offer 12.5k so we can hopefully meet in the middle at 15k? Is that how the settlement game is played? Seems dumb we can’t just say let’s meet in the middle now and be done with this. (I’m a first year, first time negotiating a settlement on my own and I don’t want to screw this up!)
