Take the job if they offer it. You can always change. Get the experience and the stability, make contacts. You’ve got time to readjust if that’s what you ultimately desire.
Lots to think about but do you like the work the new agency is making? Titles don’t really mean anything. How much of a pay cut?
You can always accept the job and continue job hunting. Passing on a full-time job in this market … I’d have a hard time turning that down. Is your freelance pay more than the Sr position? Is it stable? Lot to think about it.
If money is your primary motivation then this is a confirmation bias discussion.
Maybe consider the reason you have no concept work is you’re not a conceptual AD.
What if I just never got the opportunity or opportunities fell off for various reasons?
I’ll be super honest:
Once I was paired with an ACD that only had a design background, and it was a nightmare.
Being able to concept ideas is a skill that needs to be refined and exercised - and it’s likely that there’s a huge gap between you and other people at your level.
Maybe you have a gift, and big, interesting concepts come natural to you - but if that’s not the case, avoid yourself and potential future partner the pain.
You might be better off keep climbing the design ladder and contribute with what you can do best.
I wouldn’t say I’m the best super conceptual guy, I’ve definitely focused more on hard skills. BUT I can do some conceptual stuff, and I have in the past. For one reason or another, it just never worked out or got made. But paired with a writer, I think I’d kill it. I’d say at the very least I can identify what a good concept looks like and I won’t be the guy shooting down solid stuff my partner comes up with because “I don’t get it”. More of a “..yes and” kinda person.
No
I hope you’re not the CD from the place that’s hiring me 👀
