As someone who spent 10 years in house in the States (and has done a secondment at a firm), you really need 7 to 10 years of experience practicing law to go in house. Additionally, going in house too early limits your options later as you only know how to practice what you were taught at the company. At a law firm, you will get much more exposure to different areas of law, etc.
Network
It’s not very easy to get articling in house as there are less positions. An in house department is normally very small and they expect someone has experience even 1-2 years counts. But it’s still doable though that I know a few people starts in house right after law school. I think you should still apply articling positions in firms and then move to in house after a few years, it will be easier
