Unique resume layouts are a plus. We’re not robots, we work in a creative field even if we are in Account. Keep it professional and organized, use legible fonts, minimize the use of color, no graphs/images/etc. Utilize your space well and get across key information in a concise way. Outline your skills and accomplishments. There’s nothing wrong with showing creativity in a creative industry.
I don’t need a fancy layout to sell me on you. I need a clear understanding of your skills and experience. It’s not about the role. I just personally need the information and not a creative way to organize it. I have seen odd layouts where it looks more like an info graphic or has a headshot or other stuff. Don’t make me work too hard to see if you are a fit for what I’m looking for.
Agree with AD1. I'm okay with a bit of character as long as key info is easy to find. I wouldn't dismiss a creative or well-designed resume just because it's for an account role.
Be who u are all the time. Your resume should reflect who u are and how u think. If an agency passes on you because your resume is too “designed” then I bet you’d hate working there and it’s ultimately not the place for you. We are in a Creative industry. Be creative. And more importantly...be yourself
🙏🏻 you two!!
Thank you so much for the answers! I think as long as I dont use the crazy layout with graphs, headshots and illustrations, I’ll be good.
I dont think it’s the layout that might throw people off, just a different color scheme, which is non-black.. I dont think my fonts are too hard to read either.
Other than that, maybe it’s not the sales point solely. I do want to share that I care about how to deliver the message (how it looks and on-brand?), other than what is the message (the text). But if it’s too much of my “brand”, i guess i’ll dial it back a notch.
If you’re using a non-black layout, make sure you test a grayscale print. Last thing you want is something not printing legibly
Be yourself. Be true to yourself Don’t overthink. Last time I checked, a bit of creativity didn’t harm anyone!
Based on this feedback, it seems like there's not a clear "right" answer. If you value your creativity, you'll want to work for someone who does, to, so I say, don't strip it down completely!
I’m an account person with a creative layout (my resume has a headshot and is a light blue with nice fonts - made on canva), but i have key highlights at the top and my experience is in clear concise bullets. I think you can keep it creative but make sure your best and most relevant work is prominent and easy to scan. Account people can and should be creative, too! :) Plus I think a nice resume stands out among the black and white ones that recruiters see constantly!
I have a digital portfolio that clearly outlines the work I’ve done and the awards I’ve won. Creative portfolios IS a pull. I’ve gotten three offers in one day. It depends on the account and their goals but creative resumes are a win. I get bored of times new Roman
You’re entitled to your own opinion but by the time I interview someone the expectation is that they have the skills for that role. I’m looking for differentiating factor. If you can only think within the box and have no creative taste I have no use for you. Additionally - if you’re able to invest in the time for your presentations and resume versus a boring Times New Roman or Helvetica word doc, it shows that you know how to use programs like PowerPoint and word effectively and will know how to prep for a presentation. At a jr level details matter and i am in no mood to teach someone how to create bullets
We work in advertising. Not finance
Wow. Super direct. Thank you! I’ll take it in consideration when I revise my resume.
Or do recruiters even care about who I am as a person or just my skills...
You're cute resume induces "ugh," not "aww" or "aah." I do not look at "creative" designed resumes for account people. Straight to the trash.
Because I'm looking for substance. Over-dedigned resumes tell me you spent more time trying to make it look good than saying the right thing or, better yet, getting the experience I'm looking for. They can and should be well designed, but not creatively designed with infographics, avatars, etc.
