"Thank you for notifying me of an available extra hours. Unfortunately, I will not be available to come back in until my next appointed shift. I will let you know if anything changes. Thanks."
Just say NO. You have other obligations. You might consider looking for a different job where they are not so short staffed. Some inconvenience for you is expected but not just on demand because they had a call off or cancellation.
Yup. No means no. Put it in writing
Chief
A text at 4am?? No way. I get that they are short staffed but that is not your problem and they should not be texting you at 4am. Can you say “I am not available”? Put it in writing. I hope this improves for you!
I will suggest you read the policies of your department and the hospital. I would look for OT. If it does not state they can make it mandatory, contact HR and see if they can do it. I could offer but not mandatory OT.
If it’s not what you signed up for when hired then they can’t make you
Agree with what everyone is saying. Mandatory overtime comes with written policies to ensure proper enforcement. Texting someone they have been added without consent is a bold move. Without a policy to support that, HR would have something to say. In an effort to give the benefit of the doubt that a human error was made, maybe say, "Whoops! I think this text was intended for someone else. I don't remember agreeing to this shift and have other competing priorities that day. I wouldn't want to disappoint our hardworking team by not showing up. Thank you so much! I'll see everyone on my next scheduled shift (add a smiley face).
No! The computers say, "NO!"
Mà
Tell them nope. Out of town and won't be back till my next scheduled day.
