Can you do the work with associate support? If you have a $1MM book, practically speaking, why not bring it to a firm (different from your current one) as a partner and use their staffing to get it done? That seems substantially better than starting from (presumably) zero with a solo shingle. A $1MM book is nothing to sneeze at and a lot of lawyers would go to great lengths to keep it at basically any cost.
Don’t leave until the work is handled then go to a firm that has that kind of practice and take the client with you. Bringing 1MM of business with you gives you leverage into a new firm.
Negotiate a % of the money generated on the matter in your buyout/departure
I’m not a partner, and I can’t bring the client with me so what would be my leverage ?
