Under $200K seems a bit low…you might consider looking for a different in-house role.
Agreed. This seems super low with that many EOY. I’d recommend looking at other in-house roles before a firm. It may be quite an adjustment after so many years of being in-house. Do you really feel like drafting a narrative so you can bill for every single email you send????
Work life balance. I’m a slave to the partners and the clients. Money doesn’t make up for the fact that I feel like I can never disconnect. I worked in the corporate world before law school, and it wasn’t like this.
Yes, this exactly. Lot of us made our money and paid off our loans and are now ready to see our families again lol

Unfortunately that has changed. That is how it was when I started, and I’m grateful for that time to raise my kids. However, as a people leader for litigation in multiple states, I am reviewing files, assigning work, and watching deadlines while on PTO. I do not go anywhere with my laptop and phone. Additionally my 40 hour weeks have been gone a long time. I have lots of flexibility, but I rarely work less than 60 hours a week. I assume this is what it’s like in firm life? But with more $?
My in-house experience is all litigation, jury trials, experts, all the things. No transactional work.
Is money a big consideration for you? I’ve met at least three senior attorneys who stepped back from leadership in-house because of the always on call aspect. They just took senior/manager roles instead of head of X (litigation, or IP, etc). They seem much happier honestly.
I was fine with the money in the spells when I could do my job in 30-40 hours a week or sometimes even less. Now that we are moving back to 60 hours a week, travel, and larger spans of control, and I’m capped at the same money…under $200K (bonus helps a lot, but is discretionary and varies 10-20%), I’m wondering if I would be working similar hours for better pay in a large defense firm.
