Same experience. I started tracking the patterns:
Red flags that usually mean "not actually remote":
- "Remote (UK)" in job title
- "Must be eligible to work in UK" (sometimes means residency required)
- "Hybrid" + "flexible" (usually means 2-3 days in office)
- Company is <50 employees and not remote-first
Green flags:
- Explicit "work from anywhere" or timezone range stated
- Async-first companies (Doist, GitLab, etc.)
- Contract/freelance roles
- Companies with distributed teams for 3+ years
Started a spreadsheet with verified positions. Happy to share if it helps.
