Asian woman here! You did nothing wrong. I spent three years in BL and watched all manner of people (but mostly women and WOC) get pushed out for the most nonsensical reasons. One person got frozen out after a partner saw them going to the bathroom leaving an email unanswered. Except for a couple instances of a person legitimate quiet-quitting, I have never otherwise seen someone let go for a reason proportional to the actual infraction. (While older white male partners LOVED telling stories about making huge mistakes or making crazy decisions they weren’t penalized or let go for, not realizing that people who don’t look like them aren’t afforded similar leeway.)
It’s also an incredibly cruel industry in that quite often, any need to take time off from work, legitimate or not, is often perceived as a weakness or lack of sufficient devotion or loyalty to your job. And this perception is kept alive by partners who either ignored their family outright, left all their personal responsibilities to a spouse to handle, or sacrificed all their own personal and familial happiness, health, and/or sanity for the sake of the job, and are now totally devoid of human empathy. Honestly f them.
Well said
I am so sorry for your suffering. It is nothing about you! Thinking of it as an opportunity to make a change to leave the toxic environment. Biglaw is hard for minorities. Try to find a team (do your DD hardly) that consists of decent people if you still want to stay in the industry for a few more years.
It does! I really love my former team though I just left them for a better opportunity. I think it is also practice related. I am in a niche area and find people in my practice are generally nicer compared to the popular practices.
I wanted to leave after the first review that just really misrepresented my contributions but I had major life changes coming up (a wedding coming up within 6 months, and given my age, planning a pregnancy shortly after) and needed stability. Anyways, I cracked after coming back from my wedding, the toxic partner continued being toxic and then one of the regular big law difficult partners had one episode of being particularly cruel to me after I completed work for them sleep deprived that I needed to take medical leave. While on medical leave, I got pregnant shortly thereafter and my first trimester was particularly difficult and I was scared of coming back before the first trimester and dealing with a stress induced miscarriage due to the lack of support. I came back 4 months after, asked for accommodations (reduced hours and remote work until I delivered), HR and what was likely my team refused them. I was forced to come back without accommodations. Everyone seemed nice initially, and knew of my upcoming mat leave but I had a feeling something was wrong. 6 weeks in I’m let go for performance issues at 7 months pregnant and 2 months before my mat leave. Please tell me where I went wrong
Have you spoken with an employment lawyer?
They should give you 3 months severance on top of your mat leave paid salary.
