Am I understanding utilization rate correctly? It’s chargeable time over total time? Charged 40 hours and had 10 hours non-charge so my utilization is 80%? If so, wouldn’t it benefit me to understate non-charge hours so my utilization is higher since they only really care about chargeable time anyways? Charge 40 hours still but only put 5 hours non-charge for utilization to be 89% instead of 80%? Or am I misunderstanding how utilization works?

To elaborate, it is billable of the week divided by 40. So charging less non billable is not going to change anything.

like

Utilization is chargeable hours over 40.

like

I believe you are required to charge a minimum of 40 hours for a full week whether chargeable or non-chargeable. I am a bit confused with how you are charging 40 hours and only 5 non-charge hours. So does this mean you’re overstating your chargeable hours? lol

weekly 40 hours will always be the denominator. 40 chargeable hours and 10 non-charge: 40/40 = 100%. For that reason, always record all your times, overtime matters as well during annual review (depending on your firm).

like

At Pwc US the numerator is charged work - codes starting with a 0 or 4. Denominator is number of workdays times 8 minus holiday hours charged.

Could it be that you submitted that last 10 chargeable hours a bit late and it didn’t make it in time for the utilization % report?
