I’m finally getting to lead my own PI trial and need to work on my speech and cadence. I’m in the South but talk way to fast and cut off words without realizing it. Being excited or passionate makes it worse. App suggestions or other tips?

Record yourself, practice in front of a mirror, and speak slower than you think you need to in practice. Nerves will speed you up, so you’ll end up speaking at a normal pace day of!

Imagine you are speaking like Morgan Freeman. Your words need to mean something. Pauses (where appropriate) can do wonders.

Practice. Practice. Practice. The more you stand on your feet and give your open/close, the more comfortable on confident you’ll be. And the more comfortable and confident you are, the more control you’ll have over your delivery. You HAVE to put in the hours, no matter how tedious it feels.

I’m not sure how much time you have, but I would highly recommend the book: The Articulate Advocate.

With the problems your describing, which I also have experienced, I think there are 2 things you can do to help train yourself. First, try to place yourself in as many public speaking situations as possible (reading at church, giving a brief pitch of overview of something to your peers, getting on Facebook/Instagram live and just talking, etc.) I know it sounds ridiculous, but the more you do it, the better of you’ll be.

Second, videotape and record yourself. It’s awful. Almost all of us cringe at the sound of our voices, but don’t. We’re all hard on ourselves, and this is a great way to ensure your delivery is sounding like you want it to.

Make sure to breath! Try breathing through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.

And don’t be afraid of silence! It’s okay to take a pause and collect your thoughts. Pausing is especially great to add emphasis and let your listener digest what you just said, which may be extra important if you’re talking quickly.

I've found it very helpful to practice your speech in the mirror several times and look at the people who are supposed to be persuaded by your argument

You can see when someone is not following you and you can adjust accordingly.

Congratulations on your first lead!

When I had my first application I would talk to everyone about my submissions so that it almost became second nature to discuss

Any tips for transitioning into a new firm? I was with my previous firm for 5 years. Came to a new firm a couple weeks ago, and I’m taking over around 25-30 cases, all in different stages of litigation. Any tips for someone who went through this successfully? It’s tough, between 2 different managing partners who are different but my cases are pretty 50/50 between them. My previous firm I had far fewer cases.

Hello! I am a 5th year associate in a major TX metro. My base is $150,000 and after this year’s bonus expect to earn $220,000. In 2022, I generated $2.1M in net fee for the firm. Is this on par with what other firm’s are paying? Is it more? Is it less? Is it just right?

Question from a non-PI lawyer, if there is a car accident that causes a major injury or even death to a passenger at the fault of the driver, how far will the civil liability go for the driver? If the driver is an adult, could the plaintiff/their estate go after future earnings? Could they go after the driver’s family for recovery? Or would it just be limited to the insurance policy? I accepted a base salary of $60k as a first year associate and to expect an end of year bonus based on the settlement of my partner’s cases that I work on substantially. The bonus was only $2500 and I got a base pay raise that still doesn’t bring me into the lower 25% of the market rate. Feeling really undervalued and not sure if this is normal in “plaintiffs world”

Tip to Plaintiffs bar, the tough guy act is not as effective a tactic as you think it is. Bad behavior hurts your clients, gives overwhelmed ID lawyers and adjusters the excuse they need to triage your case and delay reporting for settlement authority.

I’ve done PI work my entire career for over 10 years. I’ve worked in state and federal courts and I’ve traveled around the country doing MDL work and bellwether trials. I’ve had a lot of success making the idiots I’ve worked for wealthy, but I’m still waiting for a moment where I enjoy what I’m doing. I feel stuck working in dysfunctional plaintiff firms/cultures. I hate this profession/career more and more each year. Has anybody been successful breaking off on their own in recent years? Advice?
