It might feel that way for the first time or just looking at the process on its own, but if you measure what you know about the company, the track record you have with them, and your loyalty to still wanting to grow with them, it's a much more familiar feeling than starting somewhere new.
I feel like there is weirdly more pressure when you're an internal hire. They have a lot of questions about your deliverables and metrics. I would rather do an external hiring process becasue they, I don't know, give you more benefit of the doubt?
Maybe I've just been lucky, but both times I have gone through an internal interview process, it has been way more relaxed than going through an external process. It is great for the confidence knowing that I already have multiple strong references from within the company to back me up.
When you go through an internal process, you typically have a better idea of what's going on at the different stages. It is nerve-wracking to me too, an external job I can just go on my way, whereas internally, I’m still working there.
