I attended an interview and did assignment for Multimedia designer role 15 days ago fo BMC team at EY GDS, still not heard back, interview was positive and assignment is also good. HR's don't reply to email and don't pick calls, should I keep hope or forgot it? I'm just asking for feedback because I have put 6 hours hard work in to assignment.

Keep business cards on you at all times. Work on sales first and generating cash flow. Set a goal on the amount you want to bring in monthly and break it down into projects. What kind and how many projects will it take to get to your monthly goal? Also get an LLC established.
I quit my steady job (that didn’t pay squat and had 0 respect for me) in October of 2019. Then Covid hit. (Big sigh) I’m working on finding enough freelance work to sustain me. Or at least find a part time job that will help me stay doing what I love and have some freedom.
Price yourself appropriately with project fees. define timeline and scope upfront
Here are some lessons I learned along the way. Did it for 4/5 years before rejoining an agency now.
• Consider trying to build something on the side first before you take the plunge. It beats diving head first into what could be an empty pool.
• Unless you have a network and outsource the grunt work, be aware that you're quitting your one job for about 5 jobs (as you'll most likely be doing client acquisition, sales, proposals and contracts, client liaising, and designing).
• Make sure you have a client pipeline to actually get clients.
• Upskill your knowledge of business so you can solve bigger problems than making graphics. Graphic design, unfortunately, is at the bottom of the value chain. So invest in yourself.
• Learn, know and have a sales system - without this you won't be locking down clients.
• You'll need to make more money than you think, I think more so if you operate as a registered business.
• It will cost a lot more money than you think - be careful of burning through savings.
• It's a big learning curve, which is great if you love learning new things.
• Growing from zero doesn't happen overnight.
• Learn to outsource and leverage other people's time quickly or you'll struggle to scale and probably burn out - unless your charging good rates.
• Get paid upfront or at least 50% upfront to secure your schedule, and use contracts.
• Have frameworks or SOPs in place (standard operating procedures) to create repeatable workflows and outcomes for clients.
Hope that helps, and all the best :)
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this! It definitely helps.
Always define the project scope and get a contract before starting any work. If your client isn’t willing to sign a contract, they certainly won’t be willing to sign a check. And good luck!
Before you jump, if you are currently in a full time salaried job I would advise you to get a 30 yr mortgage locked in based on your current predictable income record — getting a mortgage as self employed without an established income pattern will not be viewed well by banks etc. — just my 2 cents worth of experience
Yep this. I went through a break up and he owned the house. Now I have to do a lot more to buy a home for me and my children.
Definitely make them sign a contract… I still have a customer that I built a website over 1 year ago and still owes half the money….
You should do down payment, I’m about to start another agency beside my non profit design agency and the for profit agency will break down payment then remaining into benchmarks
