How’s your book? If it’s starting to look a bit dated or stagnant, personal projects that get some attention is a great way to look fresh and appealing
You honestly described my situation.
10 years of experience. Worked for Fortune 500 brands. And I was out of work for 14 months (with the exception of 2 weeks of freelance) before finding a 1-year contract.
It's not you. It's rough out there right now.
My seasoned advice is not to stay stagnant in an industry that is imploding. Better yet, take every free course in AI you can find. Become an expert. Your writing will help you write masterful prompts. Then pitch yourself as an AI Creative Director.
How long have you been unemployed?
I’ve been able to find a nominal amount of freelance work, but I have not been close to full-time for a year now.
GL dude. Curious how are you sourcing the freelance gigs ?
This was a few years ago - might not be applicable now, but. When I first started freelancing, I knocked on every Agency door, along with every other freelance copywriter. A lot of competition and alot of haggling over fees and turnaround times. So…I went door-knocking around the local industrial estates - talking to the companies that make and sell fencing, home insulation, automotive parts, kitchens etc. A lot of these companies were very naive about advertising-marketing - were happy to have someone help them with web copy, sales letters, brochures etc. Not glamorous work, but no competition and no haggling over fees. 🙂
On the same side. Anyone can come through?
In the same boat- sending ya good vibes!
I’m a freelancer now, but did art direction and graphic design for 10 years at agencies. My advice is reach out to any connection you can think of for freelance work to get your foot in the door. I’ve had the most success through people I didn’t expect to be a valuable connection. Some people worked at a company when I worked there and we didn't really cross paths much. Some I worked with years ago and haven’t talked to since. Some are account managers. You can also cold email - resource and talent managers have had the highest response rate, or if it’s a small company then find the person/people you think would be in charge of hiring creative talent (usually a creative director…but they tend to be busy). Most people won’t respond, and that has nothing to do with you. Even if they don’t have anything for you now, some reach out months down the line. Good luck!
I attempted to do the same, except sounds like you found some work. I had 5 referrals for copywriting and social media marketing and not one paid for long term help. All were prospects (lawyers) who I guess are on a tight budget. So I am resetting my expectations and in search for a 10-12 hour a day job. I have applied for 100s of jobs. Nothing, rejection and no interview.
The problem I think is discrimination. Age, female, gaps in employment, longevity concerns. I spent 12 years at Apple, 7 years at Adobe and 2 years at (now dismantled) Palm. I know what it is like to live at work 365 days a year and never get a break. I started my own business and worked that for 13 years, night and day. Is it too much to ask to get back into the fold of corporate America? In many recruiters minds I’m over qualified, over educated, lack “recent” experience doing the job I did blindfolded for years, I am a worker bee. I have had hiring manager say to me “I don’t know how to do that, XYZ.” Then thanked me for coming and dismissed my application. So I guess she saw me as a threat to her job? IDK
What happened to hiring smarter than oneself?!?
Oh no, cannot do that anymore. Instead hire the lazy, the uneducated, the sheep who need hand holding every step of the way.
I have been essentially unemployed for 5 years without claiming unemployment, without asking family for help or moving in with Mom & Dad! What now? I keep trying to convince HR people I can do the job I am applying for?
I start a micro (1 person) small business, again?!
