The straight truth. Hours are end all be all. If you don’t put the firm before everything, including spending time with your family and your marriage, you will not last. Most partners are abusive. You gotta be at their beck and call. If you are not a servile person, or very estrogeneated or low T, living for pats on the head, you won’t last too long. As soon as there’s trouble with a partner, start looking for the exit and find a recruiter asap, because the countdown has started on your exit. Odda are you’ll have to bounce from firm to firm every two years until you find your perfect firm home.
Stuff like that. Real stuff.
Or you can do the Disney trash law schools do.
Law schools push biglaw way too much
1. Make sure you understand the school’s reputation beyond the ranking (firm factory, public interest leaning, industry heavy…etc). 2. Research hiring percentages and where the graduates land immediately post-graduation. 3. Ask about the type of bar prep/support (if any) offered. Some schools have a bar prep class whereas my school left me to figure out on my own the only thing I actually needed to be a lawyer. 4. Relatedly, compare first-time bar passage numbers. I was in law school too long ago for relevant insight on the process itself. I remember submitting apps, getting accepted and showing up. One piece of advice I stand by on the essay is either tell a good story or have a good reason for going to law school. I did not have a good reason, but I can spin a tale.
Would love to hear the tale… love a good story teller … for good of course 😁
