I’m in house (employment law) and handle day-to-day advice, related projects, and pre-litigation/arbitration matters. Once matters proceed to litigation, I no longer oversee them. I currently have 2 EEOC charges and 5 demand letters. It’s challenging handling all of this on top of everything else. Is this workload normal for those of you who also do employment? My company is pretty frugal when it comes to the outside counsel budget, so this is not a viable option for me.

If you haven’t built a playbook yet, there’s no time like the present. It helps keep things uniform and streamlined, plus makes it easier to hand certain discrete tasks off to your department’s support staff/HR.

So incredibly helpful - thank you!

That's completely normal - in fact, that seems relatively light.

I didn’t include an exhaustive list of the work I do each day, but good to know that the current number of demands and charges are reasonable and expected for an in-house attorney. Thanks!

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Any tips for moving up in a medium/large-sized legal department, aside from switching companies? I work in a collegial environment with plenty of opportunities to create more value, but the management level is fairly crowded and it seems the clearest path to get one of those roles is to be hired into it. What has been your experience? Thanks!

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

Very specific to retail and/or hospitality in-house roles: has anyone found a good solution for predictive scheduling? Our retail division has one set of software for scheduling and one for payroll, and neither of them can handle predictive scheduling compliance issues unless they’re used for both the scheduling and payroll functions. I’m coming up empty on ideas for them to bridge the gap, but I’m also new to my compliance counsel role, so I would be overjoyed if anyone has suggestions.

Got a temp offer for less than a year without promise of turning into full-time. Wanted to know what ppl think about temp jobs (looks bad on resume if I don't turn full-time later within the company?) and what comp should look like (e.g. 1.2× of regular comp?).

Got another perm offer in a different industry for similar salary, but I might have to relocate and I'm concerned the work may involve translation instead of pure legal work.
