Some recruiters will tell you you're marketable when you're not because they're desperate. Some good recruiters will tell you to wait until market conditions improve. It's hard to find a good recruiter, especially if you're not in a major city.

like

Ask a recruiter where you’d fit & say you are open to hearing. If they give you a lot of places they think will look, you’re likely marketable. If they don’t follow up, you aren’t marketable.

likefunny

If you are marketable, you will likely have recruiters emailing & LinkedIn messaging you. That said, if you list your practice area, year & location (state) on fishbowl, you will likely get a few recruiter DMs.

Feel free to DM if you’d like to chat, but it’s possible I don’t know your market.

The good ones will straight up tell you. We don’t want to waste your time or ours.

I felt the same way when I first started out because I had taken some time off after graduating before entering the profession. I was connected with a couple of attorneys that were willing to get on a call with me and coach me in the areas I felt insecure. I felt much more confident going into interviews after doing that. The attorneys I spoke with were responsible for hiring at their respective firms, so their advice was very valuable.

Yes there is.

Look at job descriptions for roles you want. See where you have gaps, and go get those skills.

First time poster here!

After spending 4 years as a mid-level ops manager, I tried to break into HR through talent acquisition. Now after 6 years in TA, I've had a hard time getting out of it. My goal was always to get into a more broad HRBP position, but I've since worked for smaller orgs without a solid HR career path. When I ask about my career goals, they keep telling me, "Soon!" Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?

Anyone who has started up a side hustle whilst working in consulting - is it generally a good idea to let your employer know or will they make your life difficult/try to push you out if they know?

(Context - I need the extra income to have a shot at affording grad school, I work for a small boutique, job contract was ambiguous on the issue. Side hustle is selling stuff I make as a hobby on Amazon)

Thanks!

Does anyone know how litigation finance works on the plaintiff side? If someone wanted to bring a lawsuit against their former employer would a general contingency arrangement with a plaintiff’s firm make sense? Or would one need to find funding and then contact a plaintiff’s firm to actually handle the case? I’m a transactional lawyer, so this is out of my wheelhouse.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Transactional junior associate in biglaw. Working for a dedicated practice group rather than in an associate pool. For the past few months, I’ve been loaned to another practice group for a good chunk of time. While the people are decent and the hours aren’t terrible, I detest the work and don’t see a future in this new practice. My main partner says it should end in the next month, but I don’t expect that to happen. Is it a terrible idea to ask to be taken off?

How are 1st year litigation associates dealing with WFH? I’ve been having terrible anxiety/panic attacks, and pretty sure my billables wont exceed 110 for April. I’ve been super stressed about it and don’t know how to move on to May with the proper mindset to make up for as much time missed as possible. CA courts are still closed, and I’m worried I won’t be able to exceed (or even meet) my May goal after April.
