I’m team dual monitors. Easier to do a split screen on each for 4 docs (e.g, e-mail, adobe for PDFs, and two word docs). Trying to wrangle 4 docs onto a single ultra-wide isn’t nearly as convenient.
The ultra wides have functionalities that you can split just like dual monitors or even better!

I’m team ultra wide screen
Wait until you lateral. Some firms will give you home office equipment.
Already lateraled - they have a tech stipend that I can use to purchase equipment.
I'm team dual, maybe triple. Ultra wide just doesn't work for documents, when you full screen it's the wrong size. There's a setting that's supposed to make it work but somehow it's never compatible with firm software.
A 24 inch is the perfect size, horizontal I can view word and PDF in 2 pages per screen view, and vertical I can quickly scroll through a PDF.
Best way to do it is one ultra-wide monitor (maybe even a curved one), and then next to it, a monitor set up in a vertical aspect ratio (taller than it is wide) for viewing documents.
This is the correct answer.

Dell ultrawide, ideally their 38”. You want a 60 Hz refresh rate for all-day use and Dell also has a flicker-free screen. The 38” offers more vertical resolution than 34” ultrawides and is better for our typical uses. More resolution than two 1080p monitors. And no plastic bezels in the middle of the screen. Less neck strain with one monitor than I had with two.
Dell Display Manager software allows you to customize your screen with zones to which you can snap windows/documents. I use three vertical thirds and it’s perfect for drafting and research. I had to get this software approved by the tech team, but positioned it as part of the Dell driver package and had no issues.
One of my best purchases ever.

I’ll also add that an adjustable standing desk is nice, as is an adjustable monitor arm for use with the ultrawide. Monitors need to be at different heights above the desk for most people when they sit vs. stand, due to different leg and torso lengths. I got my desk and monitor arm from iMovr and they’ve been great for years.
All this coupled with an ergonomic keyboard and mouse and a dialed-in chair has made working from home incredible.
Dual ultrawide monitors!
1 wide curved for side by side docs, 1 vertical so I can layer multiple small internet windows there, and laptop open for email. Get a deep creamy sounding keyboard, large mouse pad, and ergonomic mouse plus a steel case chair. Mood lighting, nice speakers, and clip on camera with headset/mic
A creamy yet thocky keyboard is chef's kiss.

Got the Odyssey 49” UW a year ago. Best tech investment, ever. New Windows let’s you snap docs into various parts of your screen very easily.
Eye strain is way less. Not to mention, the monitor display is beautiful.
Go big when you go home. I have an ultrawide for side by side work, flanked by a larger vertically flipped monitor for drafting, and a smaller monitor i use for timekeeping software, doc management/file folder etc.
You using an arm to hold the monitors? Where's a good place to buy it?

I’ve been using dual monitors for several years now and increasingly noticing neck strain because it’s impossible to have them next to each other like one ultra wide monitor AND have both of them facing you at the proper angle. I’ll probably follow someone’s recommendations here and try something different because of the discomfort.

Interesting question!
I'd been wanting an ultra wide curved monitor. Hadn't occurred to me at all that it may be annoying.

This may be true for gimmicky curved monitors, but those designed for office use look the same because each part of the screen is the same distance from your eyes. Having a very wide bit flat monitor would make documents look weird and skewed.

Why not have both?

Ultrawide and then get an app like powertpys that allows your to split your monitor into windows you can snap programs to. I also have a vertical monitor off to the side for messaging, email, checklists. Absolutely love it.

May depend on your desk space at home. I have an ultra wide. Dual monitors would take up too much real estate on my home desk.
Also depends on your laptop & docking station’s capability. Dual monitors at lower resolution is probably fine. But dual higher res may not play nice with your system.
I have a 34" ultra wide curved monitor and a 24" standard monitor on a vertical display setting at home.
Can't do any other configuration anymore.
Just got approval from the firm to replicate the configuration in the office.
I have a colleague who has 3 x 24" - all on vertical display setting.
Samsung Odyssey 49 is king! I am in store for one of those.
