It’s not a terrible place to be. The firm is heavily litigation/regulatory focused, though I think there’s a push to (slowly) expand the corporate practices as well. Things can obviously get busy at the drop of a hat (the consequences of being “leanly staffed” lol), but people aren’t generally expecting you to bill crazy hours (I’ve been between 2000-2100 since I got here and no one’s taken any issue with that/said that I have to pump up my numbers to stay on the partnership track). I’ve also gotten experience taking/defending deps, had lots of client contact, and been able to run smaller matters of my own/get stand-up experience in court, which I guess is pretty cool.
DC is definitely a little stuffy—lots of firm lifers/older partners there who take the “white shoe” thing a little too seriously, but there are a lot of other interesting groups out of that office as well.
Edit: In terms of comp, I know it’s slightly below market bonuses, but I think we’re market on base salary (I think we matched whoever the last mover was, but it’s hard to keep track!).
It’s a smaller office (something like 20-30 lawyers, I think) and it’s quite independent. As someone from another satellite, I think I worked with folks in just about every other Steptoe office except for LA. But, I think that’s a consequence of having partners there who don’t rely on DC to get their work; they have some pretty heavy hitters in LA doing a pretty wide variety of work—in particular, I think a lot of class action work is run from that office land there are also a couple of former AUSAs doing a lot of white collar work. Overall, it seems like a pretty chill office that does its own thing; but that’s not to say you’ll be isolated there—I think some of the associate (and firm) leadership team is based out of LA, so it’ll still feel like part of the larger firm, even if much of the work is west-coast based.
