I have started using a more guided math approach with my Algebra 1 Honors 8th graders and they love it. I dont use traditional stations in the sense the kids are in groups and they move around. Rather they have certain tasks to complete including watching an edpuzzle video of me teaching the lesson and other assignments. They come to me in groups for practice and formative assessment.
I would love to hear suggestions on how to set one up.
I used to teach in a center based school. It was like Math Workshop. We had a number sense station (we did a lot of review, facts, fraction work), a math minute station, a vocab station, a computer station, and a book work/classwork station. There was also an ability based direct instruction station. The biggest thing we did that made it a success is taught the process before we did direct instruction. It took a couple weeks, but the students needed to have procedures before instruction. We also had an accountability chart. The students had to get it signed by another student. Of course there were huge consequences if they sign someone's chart dishonestly. We also had self checking areas, with consequences also for cheating. We never really had those problems though.
Was this done in a middle school setting or elementary? We have 47 minute classes in my middle school and would love to know how this works in a similar time frame.
