No, it would seem like a great time to get in touch with a local recruiter or start applying. Alternatively, if you have a good relationship with your prior firm, maybe you could return remotely given Covid?
I lateraled three times and as long as you have a good reason for the moves and say nice things about your previous employer, nobody cares.
Maybe I'm missing something, but why not just enjoy the low workload, as long as they are paying you? 🤣
Take the extra time you have and put it to productive use like business development (which can sometimes double as networking for a new job), personal fitness, really knocking assignments out of the park, etc.
I was busy at my old firm and genuinely enjoyed the opportunity to prove myself, which makes this situation all the more abnormal.
I would note that I’ve invested significant time in marketing (writing articles, organizing conferences, joining boards, etc.) and helping with internal administrative tasks, to the point where I easily exceed 2k hours including those efforts. The problem that I see is that I’m a 4th year associate who needs an opportunity to actually learn from doing the work I’m supposed to be getting.
I’m at a national firm and have reached out to people in other practice groups/offices but the response has been pretty lukewarm - which is probably due to remote work and the fact that I know most of the associates in the office I’m in are slow (just not as dead as me).
Part 2: I out billed the other associate I was hired with last cycle, but still feel barely employed. I just had an infuriating conversation with my group chair where she took no responsibility for the over hiring and basically said keep your fingers crossed that more work comes in. Are they just waiting for one of us to leave? Should I wait to see if things get better?
