C is definitely similar to M in terms of responsibility and pay.
C is post MBA and you would sit there at ZS for 2-3 years, although I did see an experienced hire promoted in 1.5 recently.
If you come in at M without previous consulting management experience, you will probably struggle greatly tbh.
I came in as a C with MBA and we'll aligned previous work experience, but no consulting experience. C was quite the challenge for me.
Not as an official title. That would be a 2nd or 3rd year consultant
I came from a B4 to ZS. No way is ZS C = B4 M.
You will hear all kinds of conjecture otherwise but if I were you I’d get my answer from people whom have actually worked at both types of firms who have the first hand experience to provide accurate answer. Just my two cents. Good luck!
Could you elaborate on why ZS C doesn’t equal B4 M? What are the differences in responsibilities or expectations?
It’s very hard to succeed as an external M hire at ZS (or AP); money at C/M isn’t that much difference so I’d encourage you to lean C and build your network
OP why are you moving to another firm for lateral title and no pay increase!? If you have 8.5 YOE in consulting at KPMG and make 180K base now you are 100% candidate for M role and you should negotiate pay increase - don’t sell yourself short! (Note: I have worked at a B4 firm and also here at ZS).
Given your experience and current comp, this sounds like a lateral move at best. You’ll probably get offered something similar to your current comp, potentially slightly less (180K is the high, high end of C base salaries). However, if you succeed at ZS, there is tons of room for growth. Personally, I’d only go for the C role if I felt like I was hitting a wall at my current firm or didn’t see good growth opportunities there
And finally, do you need to align to an office at ZS, as in relocate in case your city doesn't have one? I am based in Boulder and work fully remote permanently except for client travel.
It’s variable. The leaders of the offices will give us about a 3 months heads up before we have to go back in. But I am going to guess late summer/ early fall.
Do y’all know what happens If I decide to leave ZS within one year of joining? Do I have to return my signing bonus?
In that case, go for it.
Agreed. M at ZS right now and I definitely think you should go for M. The M role is at ZS is really wide. Home grown M aren’t even eligible for AP for 3 years, which would be the case for you if you start at C. First year as M, they tell us not even to worry too much about selling. What you are describing as sales credit is very much how most 1 yr M get their credit. Don’t let recruiting or other Ms tell you otherwise. Your base expectations are also more in line with M. M is distinctly the first step in leadership so while I agree that senior C / M responsibilities overlap, you should absolutely shoot for the higher one since you are giving up your current network and taking a chance on a new company.
