Talk it out with a friend or family member first, get that stress out of your system. IMHO, they could probably fire you without the meeting, so the meeting isn’t that.
It’s probably a meeting for your benefit, for them to get to know you and for you to showcase the unique things about you that they never get to see. So be cool. Don’t word vomit a therapy session to them about your personal struggles, thinking they’ll admire the honesty; they’re professionals who want to see you are professional too. Less personal, more professionalism.
Get rest, suit up. Get on the zoom early. And watch something inspiring the night before, something that’ll give you confidence. You need to reframe the “ominous” meeting into an “exciting opportunity” to show them you’re a badass and you add value to their team. They do not care about the personal struggles. We all have them. They want to know you have the capacity to put the struggles aside and still show up to get the work done.
Well, fresh start is always nice. If it’s any consolation, we’re all in the same boat: lots of shit going on in the world, lots of distractions everywhere, a ton of uncertainties to warrant anxieties. I can tell you’re a thoughtful person and that’ll take you great places, just believe in yourself. You got this!
...I already have ADHD and anxiety, and working remotely with people who I’ve never been in the office with has just made it so much harder for me to get the hang of this and establish a routine and good habits, and I’m really struggling. The most obvious result of this is that I’ve been terrible about entering my time. I’ve gotten multiple phone calls and increasingly less gentle reminders about it, and I expect this zoom call will be a come-to-Jesus moment about that as well as generally being behind on deadlines, etc. I don’t think it’s at the point that they would fire me (the firm is doing well, there have been no layoffs, and my group specifically is swamped and in the middle of looking to hire more associates). But I’m just terrified and don’t know how to approach this call. I have no excuse other than that I’m just really struggling to stayed focused and productive and on top of organization while working from home. I don’t have kids so I feel like I will get no sympathy. Should I be honest? What do I say?
