Apply to firms that have a mix of both. Some ID and some commercial lit. Make the switch internally. I switched as a 3rd year and ended up starting with insurance defense but before the end of the year my practice was entirely products liability litigation.
I did commercial law at an ID firm for 3.5 before moving to BL commercial lit practice. Got the job based on the experience I got at the ID firm (generally, you get to handle a lot more at ID than BL), good reference, and solid interview. Good luck!

I did with an intermediate move to a small commercial firm. That’s likely the play for you. If you have a strong academic background, a federal clerkship would be another great way to pivot to biglaw comlit. Network and look for opportunities at good regional firms. Good luck!
That makes sense, and I really appreciate your perspective on this. I graduated cum laude from a t50 school and was on law review. So, not sure how that all shakes out. I just ended up not having a great interview cycle during OCI. Most of my friends from law review are in BL. I’m at a good midsize firm with great culture, it’s just a shame I really don’t like ID work and have loved the small amount of commercial work I’ve been able to do. I’d be more than happy to swing midlaw or bottom end of biglaw too if it gets me that experience, at least to start!
