But most of the firms suck and have horrible exits so do your homework
If you’re in LS, what’s considered a “horrible” exit is very relative. People get into this space because of some semblance of humanitarianism and wanting to have an impact on human health without actually being the doctor or scientist. Some of these so called “great” exits keep you very far away from that impact or have you in some high level position at a company with crappy assets or technology that are going nowhere. Meanwhile someone with a so called “horrible” exit ends up closer to what they wanted to achieve when they got in the space in the first place. For example I don’t care how much it pays, I couldn’t care two shits about a market access role but to some people a director level position in that is considered a great exit.
Damn SciVida trying to poach you too?
I agree that some of the comments may be light on detail, but I do think it’s worth taking repeated feedback seriously when multiple people raise similar concerns about a firm’s culture. Even if some of those perspectives come from former employees, the consistent theme I’ve heard is that problematic behavior can be rewarded or promoted internally.
For someone considering a lateral move, that matters. Compensation is important, but I’d personally rather take a modest pay cut than step into an environment where I might be undermined by poor management or a toxic project lead. Not trying to pile on, just saying culture risk is a real factor when evaluating an opportunity.
The meh firms are just passing people around. Good industry exits are way down unless you have several YOE. Every recruiter I talk to isn’t offering anything compelling.
